The bulk of the collection consists of published and manuscript speeches and articles written by Richard E. Cheney between 1958 and 1990. The topics addressed in the speeches and articles include stockholder relations, corporate takeover strategies, and public relations and the legal profession. Other materials include a variety of reports and articles by or about Hill and Knowlton, dating from 1966 to 1989, and a folder of correspondence, photographs, and certificates.

Biographical / Historical

Richard E. Cheney served as chairman of the board of Hill and Knowlton Inc., an international public relations and public affairs counseling firm, from 1987 to 1991. Cheney joined the firm in 1960 and established a national reputation for providing public relations advice to companies involved in corporate crises. He served variously as executive vice-president, member of the policy committee, financial relations director, vice-chairman, and head of Hill and Knowlton’s United States division. During Cheney’s tenure as chairman, Hill and Knowlton expanded in the fields of investor and financial public relations, and provided public relations counseling for law firms, particularly in proxy fights and hostile takeovers. Cheney retired from the firm in 1993 after serving two years as chairman emeritus.
