The materials in the collection primarily document the various projects on which Airy consulted. These projects include the Alexandria Reclamation (draft proposal concession for reclaiming from the sea, a portion of the Eastern Harbor of Alexandria), Archimedean Screw (1880) from the Easton & Anderson and Erith Iron Works, Inspection of Barrow Bridge, Bow Church ("Report of the condition of the Coast of Dunwich and on the steps to be taken for preventing or diminishing the encroachment of the sea"), Orwell Park Observatory, River Wyre Bridge, and Train Vibrations for the Cambridge Observatory. Many of the reports for the projects include original drawings. Also included in the collection are specifications, schedules and pricing for various railway projects, Geodesy (mathematical) problems presumably used for the election of Associate Members into The Institution of Civil Engineers, lists of pamphlets compiled by Airy, and notes on topics including cylinders and locks, and miscellaneous investigations. Materials include reports, architectural drawings and specifications, articles of agreement, and blueprints.

Biographical / Historical

Wilfrid Airy was born in 1836 and was the son of Sir George Biddell Airy. He earned a B.A. from the University of Cambridge and eventually became a Civil Engineer of London. He was a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Board of Electors to the Chair of Mechanism and Applied Mathematics in the University of Cambridge, and author of "Treatises on the Spiral Pump, the Scoop-Wheel, Iron Arches, and many short papers on Engineering subjects. Airy died in 1925.
