Processing Information

Processed: July 2001

By: Maggie Hale

Processing Note:

The photographs included in the General File Photograph Collection were formerly part of the large PM (Pictures of Manufacturing) and PG (Pictures Geographic) files. The collection was processed as part of the Historical Collections manuscript photograph project in 2001. The PM and PG files were dismantled during the project. Large, distinct groups of photographs were removed and arranged as separate collections, such as the Industrial Life Photograph Collection and the Caterpillar Tractor Company Photograph Collection. The photographs that remained were arranged as the General File Photograph Collection. Each group of photographs was assigned an appropriate Cutter industry number and then divided into twenty-three series based on the general industry grouping.

The Baker Library Classification of Business Literature industry numbers that were assigned to the photographs as part of the PM and PG files were retained for the General Files collection. The photographs were arranged by industry number and also by size. Each grouping of photographs was assigned to a title. The photographs were rehoused into acid- and lignin-free folders and stored in drop-front boxes of the appropriate size. Within each box, folders are arranged by industry number and within the industry number, alphabetically by group title.
