Biographical / Historical

The Troy and Greenfield Railroad was chartered in 1848 to build a railroad eastward from Troy, New York to Greenfield, Massachusetts, providing a link between the existing Vermont and Massachusetts Railroad and the Connecticut River Railroad. Construction of the railroad included excavating the Hoosac Tunnel between Florida and North Adams, Massachusetts. The railroad was leased to the Troy and Boston Railroad in 1856 and then consolidated into Fitchburg Railroad in 1887. The railroad continued operating under the name Troy and Greenfield until 1890.

Details for this historical note come from the Massachusetts Archives finding aid for Minutes of the stockholders of the Troy and Greenfield Railroad Company, 1848-1890.
