Scope and Contents
Letter book No. 6. Business correspondence of Samuel Sanford from June 22, 1818-December 2, 1825. The outgoing letters from Sanford include the collection of notes for sold goods, reminders of promissory notes and balances due for payments on goods sold, and requests for the shipments of goods. In many of the letters Sanford provides specific details on how the good should be shipped including the vessel, captain of the vessel and trade route. It appears that the goods originated from various places including London, Havana, Trinidad, Belgium and India. Many of the letters are addressed to the captains of the various vessels, customers and merchants. Goods purchased and shipped include cloth (e.g., seersucker, sewing silk, gurrah [muslin], and cotton), sugar, coffee, ivory, and other commodities. Several of the letters in 1825 are co-signed by Samuel Fales and Captain Augustine Heard transported some of Sanford's goods.
