Adra Ashley accompanied her husband, Captain Edward R. Ashley, on a whaling trip in the Pacific. The two diaries document the voyage to Hawaii and the return home.

Biographical / Historical

Adra Caroline Braley (1834-1906) was born in Rochester, Massachusetts to Ezekiel and Lucy Braley. In 1853, she married Edward Roundsville Ashley (1824-1900) in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Early in their marriage she accompanied him on a whaling trip in the Pacific. Edward was captain of the ships Reindeer and William Wirt. Adra and Edward resided in Hilo, Hawaii, for three years, from 1857 to 1860, during which time they had their first child Edward (Eddie).
