John Alden receipt book

Scope and Contents

Receipt book of maritime agent Captain John Alden, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, recording payment of shares in whaling voyages and wages to maritime workers, dated 1774-1816, as well as prize money to the crew of several privateers during the American Revolutionary War. Vessels sailed from Dartmouth, Fairhaven, and New Bedford, and included the ships Dartmouth, Friendship, Industry, and Rainbow. In late 1776, Alden paid out multiple shares of prize money for investors and sailors on the privateer Isaac: Marshall Jenkins signed for the share due Native American mariner Silas Maqua, which amounted to more than £138; and George Allen receipted the shares of the voyage "for my boys." Other recipients were Ebenezer Jenne, Nathaniel Cushing, and Micah Hathaway. There are also receipts for shares in the privateer sloop Warren in 1777 from Benjamin Church, Obed Nye, and Ichabod Stoddard, among others, and receipt for wages on the ship Argo from Simond Moses in 1776. Additionally includes a record of payment in 1795 related to the ship Commerce, which was cast away in 1792 near Cape Morebet, Saudi Arabia. The volume further contains receipts for lumber, some personal accounts, a poem about growing up in New England, a bill of depreciation for 1777-1779, and medical recipes for sea sickness and indigestion.
