The collection includes an instruction book in arithmetic for commercial transactions, dated January 1788. Inserted into the volume is a memorandum describing a journey from Andover, Connecticut to Whitestown, New York, from June 19 to September 14, 1788. Accompanying the volume is a four page statement by the donor about his ancestor's life and a picture of Benjamin Blackman and of his farm at Verona, New York taken from the family geneaology.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin Blackman was born in Mansfield, Connecticut on September 25, 1763. During his lifetime he was a master mechanic, farmer, and a teacher. He also served as a lieutenant and later a captain in the Oneida County militia. He moved to Westmoreland, New York in 1788 and married Pamela Murduck in 1793. In 1807, he moved to a farm in Verona, New York where he remained until his death. Pamela died in 1818, and Blackman married to Parthenia Brewster in 1819. He died March 23, 1858 and is buried in Verona Cemetery in Oneida County, New York. His nephew and adopted son, Elijah Blackman, inherited most of his estate.
