The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association originated through a forum held in Chicago on October 21, 1898 for the development and study of recommended practices for the newly-integrated standard-gauge North American railway network. Another meeting convened in 1899 in Buffalo, New York lead to the adoption of a constititution and establishment of a permanent organization. The name of the organization was later shortened to American Railway Engineering Association (AREA). In 1997, AREA merged with he American Railway Bridge and Building Association (ARB&B) and Roadmaster's and Maintenance of Way Association (RMWA) to form a new organization using the 1899 name, The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA).
