Scope and Contents
Daybook of William Trotter recording sales of general merchandise, primarily dry goods, steel, and tin plate imported from Great Britain, profits and losses, accounts of stock, bonds, notes, and bills of exchange, insurance and shipping costs, and other payments and expenses of the business of Trotter and Joseph Sansom, dated 1799-1800. Names in the volume include William Sansom, Trotter & Haines, Benjamin Chamberlain, London merchants Capper Startin & Co., Jane Taylor, Newberry Smith, Jane Owen, Lohra & Carlisle, Mary Claypool, Thurston & King of New York, Pieschell and Brogden, Thomas Kelly & James Curtin, and Benjamin West & Co. Also includes entries for interest, taxes, and some legal fees. An April 1800 entry of Joseph Sansom contains a charge for cash paid to subscriptions to the Dispensary, Abolition Society, and a "black school."
