William Smith Hobart correspondence, 1862-1873 Digital

Scope and Contents

Contains correspondence of William Smith Hobart, son of Robert E. Hobart, Jr., dated in 1862 while he was a Union Army officer. Includes a letter to Smith from Lieutenant J.T. Potts, enclosed with a bible that was made by Sergeant C.W. Winthrop while he was a Confederate prisoner in Richmond, Virginia. Potts also discusses Winthrop's treatment there by Captain C.E. Chichester (1834-1898). Other letters from Smith to his wife Sarah in September and October describe religious services for his regiment, Confederate prisoners he encountered, skirmishes with Confederate troops, and conditions of the Union camp in Washington, D.C., as well as his arrival in Frederick, Maryland, where, he wrote, troops awaited orders from General George McClellan. Smith wrote to his mother of his arrival in Peru, New York, in 1873, and the health of his family there.
