Stephen Collins correspondence to Jonathan Amory, 1776 Digital
Scope and Contents
Contains correspondence from Philadelphia merchant Stephen Collins to Jonathan Amory in 1776 regarding the settlement of the estate of William Barrell, Amory's & Taylor's trading partner. Letters from Collins, the estate administrator, reference the involvement of John Hancock, at the time serving in the Continental Congress, who shipped to Collins a trunk containing Barrell's possessions, including Continental paper money. Collins repeatedly requests that Amory travel to Philadelphia in person to settle Barrell's affairs, which also included shares in two privateer ships, the contents of his store, accounts outstanding with Hancock and others, and debts due the estate.
