Subseries H. Correspondence, 1797-1890

Scope and Contents

This subseries contains correspondence of the Peace Dale Manufacturing Co., 1797-1890. The correspondence makes up the bulk of the Peace Dale records and consists of bound letter books and loose correspondence. The bulk of the correspondence dates from the 1830s to 1890s and includes letters to and from Rowland G. Hazard, Isaac Peace Hazard, Rowland Hazard II and Rowland G. Hazard II pertaining to their management and operation of I.P. & R.G. Hazard, R.G. Hazard & Co., and the Peace Dale Manufacturing Co. Some subject matter details orders, sales, management of the company, customer requests, business ventures, and day to day operations of the textile mill.

The earliest letters in this subseries include correspondence between brothers, Isaac and Rowland as they began to grow the company from a small textile production mill to a powerful manufacturing company. Letters between the brothers discuss market fluctuations and prices of cotton and wool, quality of merchants selling their goods, and business strategy. Many of the early letters, prior to 1840, are sent directly to Rowland or Isaac at Peace Dale from Southern plantation owners with orders for shoes and clothing listing names and measurements of their slaves. After 1840, the correspondents become mostly commission firms and selling agents handling orders for Peace Dale. There is correspondence related to family members located here too. Also in this subseries is a bound letter book (v. 147) containing correspondence written by Isaac Peace, commission merchant of Charleston, South Carolina and father-in-law of Rowland Hazard, and a letter book (v. 148) of Peter Ayrault, partner of Rowland Hazard in Charleston. There is a series of letters written to Henry Ward of New York City by Greene family members, 1806-1837.
