Subseries C. Sales and order records, 1794-1918

Scope and Contents

This subseries contains the sales and order records of the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company and the Carolina Mills, 1794-1918. Clients and selling agents sent correspondence accompanying the sales and order information to the Peace Dale Manufacturing Co. Major selling agents included EC Dyer of Boston, Pease and Brown of Philadelphia, Jenkins & Huntington of New York City, and Owen, Day & Root of Hartford, among others. The correspondence details the cost of materials, shipments of goods, and quantity and quality of material ordered. The correspondence highlights the brisk pace of business and the geographical markets where Peace Dale's products were sold. The earliest sales material in this subseries, roughly 1800-1840, relates to textiles sold to Southern plantations owners referred to as "Negro cloth". Some orders written by Southern plantation owners contain slave names and include size measurements for shirts and shoes. Invoices for goods produced by the Carolina Mills and the Peace Dale Mfg. Co. are located here also. The consignment books, vols, 144-146 contain information on the shipment of goods including amount, cost to ship, and destination.
