Biography

James Emery, son of Thomas and Susanna (Hill) Emery, was born in Biddeford, Maine on November 22, 1738. As a farmer, Emery toiled in a variety of tasks in order to support his family. He sold wheat, cloth, veal, gunpowder, beans, rum, molasses, corn, and coffee. In addition, he hauled boards, hewed wood, framed buildings, mowed saltgrass and worked in a shipyard.James Emery married twice. He and his first wife, Mary Scammons, wed in 1763. They had eleven children. Emery and his second wife, Sarah Jenkins, did not have any children.
