Biography

George Ellery Hale was born June 29, 1868. He was known as an American solar astronomer and his discovery of magnetic fields in sunspots. He was the leader or key figure in the planning or construction of several world-leading telescopes at Yerkes Observatory, Mount Wilson Observatory at Palomar Observatory.

Hale graduated from MIT and the Harvard College Observatory, (1889–90). He was a PhD student in Berlin (1893–94) but never finished his degree.

He died in Pasadena, California on February 21, 1938.

Typescript and handwritten letter signed by Mildred Bliss to Beatrix Farrand (Trix). Date of letter is uncertain, but it was created after Lucie Howe Draper Schelling's death, February 4, 1938 as it is discussed in the letter. Mildred mentions the grief felt by Ernest Schelling, Lucie's husband. She also mentions to Beatrix Farrand, Sumner Welles may be interested in Edith Wharton's letters.

Mildred and Robert Bliss asks that flowers be sent and to include a spray of forget-me-knots in the arrangement. They let Max and Beatrix Farrand know the wire sent was received.
