Biography

Thomas H. Powers was born in 1812 to a Quaker family. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1833 and became acquainted with John Farr, the quinine manufacturer. He begam working for John Farr & Co. with Farr's nephew William Weightman. In 1874, Powers was recognized by the Franklin Institute with a Gold Medal in 1874 for creating a more economical way to manufacture akaloids. Thomas Powers died in 1878.
