Biography

Born in St. Albans VT in 1801, William Shepard Wetmore was an Old China Trade merchant and philanthropist from New England. He was involved in a number of trading firms in South America, China, and New York City. Eventually moved to Newport, Rhode Island, where he built Chateau-sur-Mer, one of the first mansions on Bellevue Avenue.
