Harvard Co-operative Society (Cambridge, Mass.)
Administrative History
The Harvard Cooperative Society (also know as the "Harvard Coop" or "The Coop") was founded in 1882 by members of the Harvard community in order to avoid inflated prices for books and supplies at stores in Harvard Square. In 1916, when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) moved from Boston to Cambridge, the Coop opened a branch on the MIT campus, known as the MIT Coop or The Coop at MIT. As of 2021, there are two branches at MIT, one in Kendall Square and one in the MIT Student Center.
